Why 1841? Because it was in 1841 that the burgeoning settlement was provided with a Resident Judge of the Supreme Court of New South Wales. There was a Resident Judge in Melbourne between 1841 and 1852, when the position was replaced by that of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Victoria.
