Movie: Maudie

Oh, this was such a sad film.  Based on a true story, it’s not crying-type sad, but just regretful about the pain we inflict on others, and that human drive for dignity.  It’s beautifully filmed and both Ethan Hawke and Sally Hawkins are just brilliant. The audience just sat there, silent when it finished, drinking it all in.

I think a five for me.

And here’s a video of the real Maud Lewis.

  1. Oh yes, yes, yes, Mr Gums and I saw this in Sacramento back in July. It was a very hot day so we decided to go to the movies. Found ourselves near a lovely historic cinema, and Maudie just about to start. Had never heard of it but it sounded interesting, and we loved it too. I do love Sally Hawkins (except for her Persuasion but I think that was the direction rather than her that was my problem), and Ethan Hawke did a good job. As you say, such a sad but warm film about connection, dignity, being to oneself and that joy in her actual art.

  2. I have seen the trailer a few times, but have not so far seen the film. All I can say is that the landscape in Labrador looked perfect.
