Six degrees of separation between Judge Willis and….Oscar Wilde

Can I link Judge Willis and Oscar Wilde in fewer than six steps?  Easy.

1. Oscar Wilde’s very good lifelong friend was Robbie Ross.

2. Robbie Ross’ full name was Robert Baldwin Ross. He was named for his maternal grandfather, Robert Baldwin.

3. Robert Baldwin was a lawyer and parliamentarian in Upper Canada and aan ally and friend of….

4.  Judge Willis, Puisne Judge of the King’s Bench, Upper Canada!

  1. HA! That’s fantastic. I love playing six degrees.

  2. How about YOU and Judge Willis? 😉

    • Inseparable!!! (lol)

      Here goes:
      1. Judge Willis lived in Heidelberg when he was here in Port Phillip. He rented a house from Watson and Hunter called ‘Rosanna’ between 1841 and 1843. The house was on the top of the hill, overlooking the river to the south.
      2. I lived in a house on the top of the hill, overlooking the river to the south. We shifted in 120 years after Judge Willis did. The original ‘Rosanna’ burnt down in the 1920s, and the house that replaced it was the house next door.

So, given a time slip of 120 years, Judge Willis was the man next door.

  3. In 1849 Willis’s former landlord, James Watson, purchased Section 13 in the Parish of Doutta Galla, the southern boundary of which is Buckley Street, Essendon. I live on the south side of Buckley Street, a few hundred yards from the Section 13 eastern boundary on Lincoln Rd. So I am a neighbour of Willis’s landlord. So I am *practically* on first name terms with James Watson, Willis’s old landlord.
